Healthy skin is beautiful skin, and this is possible at every age! Here are some skin saving secrets that will help you maintain your natural beauty:

In your 20s— skin protection starts with healthy habits! The number one tip to maintain glowing skin is to wear sunscreen. Photoaging refers to the textural and pigmentation changes that are a result of exposure to the sun’s UV rays. When these harmful rays hit our skin, a chemical reaction occurs. The result? Formation of free radicals. Think of these free radicals as tiny firecrackers going off within the layers of our skin: they cause inflammation and damage wherever they go. Sunscreen blocks against these damaging reactions and allows our skin to maintain its natural healing abilities. I recommend my patients to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 every day, rain or shine.

In your 30s and 40s— this is the time when we start to notice those pesky brown spots, a few fine lines and maybe even some adult acne. The one ingredient to add to your skin care arsenal to address all of these problems is retinol. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that has several benefits: it promotes fresh collagen production, mildly exfoliates the top layers of the skin and can even help with excess oil production and large pores. Several over the counter night creams have retinol as an active ingredient, however prescription grade retinol can be more effective so speak to your dermatologist!

In your 50s and over– all of the above are essential, but consider adding medical grade chemical peels or laser treatments to help rejuvenate the skin. There are several different types of lasers that act on different targets within the skin to enhance overall skin texture, fine lines and pigmentary issues. With time, we also notice that the skin on our lower face, jawline and neck loses its elasticity and creates unwanted bottom heavy look in the face. New advancements in non invasive skin tightening technology offer great results to help with this skin laxity with minimal downtime. I often tell patients that the goal of all these interventions is to allow yourself to maintain your natural beauty but allow yourself to age more gracefully and with more confidence.
